This picture has made my day!
“What is it about England that you love? Is it the people or the double-decker busses?”
The woman on the left is my mum and the woman on the right’s name is Candy. Candy was one of my Aunt Denise’s best friends and she died of cancer on Friday in Toronto. I had the pleasure of meeting Candy more than a few times in my life and I even went on vacation with her, Aunt Denise, and my mum to Turkey in 2006 and to Finland in 2003. Candy was somewhat of an idol for me back then and the last time I spoke to her was last August. She was so kind and smart and just amazing to be around. She loved to live to the fullest extent and I will forever miss her. I didn’t even know she was ill.
I love you, Candy. I hope heaven is full of red wine and pink things and red wine.
Rest in Peace ♥
I wanted to feel as beautiful as Azmarie from America’s Next Top Model looked here, so I put on some makeup, earings, and my slut dress and had a mini photoshoot with my webcam. I think I might start styling my hair like this more :)
Today was horrible. It was going well, but then it just shrivelled up and was crushed by my HALAC teacher’s foot. Allow me to explain/vent.
Today in my Honors American Lit class, we were presenting our Photostory presentations on people from the Harlem Renaissance. For those of you that may not know what Photostory is, its basically just a slideshow that you narrarate. I’ve done Photostory projects before and I know that they can get really boring after a while. So, my partner Makena and I thought it would be a good idea to both entertain and get people to listen to our presentation on Billie Holiday by me speaking in a different accent whenever it was my turn to narrarate. It seemed like a great idea when we recorded the marrarations last week, but we were wrong.
During the presentation, I speak with a Texas-style souther accent, a New Orleans-style southern accent, and Irish, French, Valley girl, and even a New York accent to keep the presentation allive. Those accents go in order and we didn’t get past the French one when she stopped our Photostory.
She was saying things like “disresectful” and “rediculous”. I have never been so embarrassed in a classroom ever in my life. Ever. My heart sank ad I started to shake because I was freaking out about it. Right after class I locked myself in a bathroom stall and hyperventalated until the 2-minute warning bell went off.
Now, I really don’t want to portray my english teacher as a bitch because she really isn’t! She teaches us well and usually her class is the one I most look forward to every day. This was her position on the matter: while my French accent was playing (bare in mind that it is rediculous and very stereotypical) the song “Strange Fruit” was playing in the backround and that was the one we were explaining. “Strange Fruit” is a very powerful and disturbing song about the lynching of a black man in a still-racist America. When I read the lyrics for the first time, I cringed at the mental image it put in my head! It is a song that needs to be dealt with with great respect and that is why she got upset. My AP US History teacher (who works with my english teacher) said that she was upset because people were laughing at the song (but they were actually laughing at the changing accents), not because I was talking in different accents. I think it was both.
It was our mistake, though. We should have never done it. Makena said it would be funny as a joke, I took her seriously, and now if we don’t get things straightened out with her, we maybe out 50 points this term. That freaks me out. We asked other people in the same class if they thought she would mark us down if we did it and they all said no. Why would she? As long as we had good, credible information, a work cited page, and good diction and tone when we spoke that it didn’t matter what accents we did, right? Wrong. We should have gone to her and asked permission to do something like that. Even though we debated whether to put the French one in there and toned down the crazy for the more serious parts, We should have given the song more respect. I could go on, but I’ve got homework. Hopefully she doesn’t fail us for a laps of judgement and for trying to entertain- which we did.
